Bearing Life

Many contractors have no understanding of how bearing life works and will often try to buy swivels with less capacity that they really need simply because they feel the safety factor will get them through.  This is a big mistake.

Bearing life is determined by its Dynamic Capacity and the typical load applied during pullback which is called the "Applied Load".  The DUB Swivel bearings are designed to have typical average life of 250 hours when operated under a continuous Applied Load equal to the swivel safe working load, however:

  1. As the Applied Load is increased the bearing life is decreased
  • At 10% above Safe Working Load, the bearing life decreases by 25% or to 187 hours
  • At 25% above Safe Working Load, the bearing life decreases by 49% or to 127 hours
  • At 50% above Safe Working Load, the bearing life decreases by 70% or to 75 hours
  • At 100% above Safe Working Load, the bearing life decreases by 87% or to 32 hours

    2.   As the Applied Load is decreased, the bearing life is increased

  • At 10% below Safe Working Load, the bearing life increases by 40% or to 350 hours
  • At 25% below Safe Working Load, the bearing life increases by 140% or 600 hours
  • At 50% below Safe Working Load, the bearing life increases by 700% or to 2000 hours

It is clearly our recommendation to always use a swivel with higher capacity than the machine it is used on.

When a DUB Swivel is operated under a typical load cycle (stops, starts, gradual build up of load from minimum to maximum), the predicted life is approximately 1400 hrs.  Predicted bearing lives assumes that the bearings are kept clean, cool and properly lubricated. .
