There are several criteria that should be understood before discussing Safety Factor. The first criteria is the bearings. They are selected using the catalog listed Dynamic (rotational) rating. For example a 10,000 lb. swivel, bearings are selected that also have a 10,000 lb. (or greater) rating. This means that the bearings will have a life of 1,000,000 revolutions at that load rating. How the life is affected by increasing or decreasing that load is discussed later. The second criteria is all the components that support the bearings - the shaft, the clevis pins, all threaded connections etc. The Safe Working load rating of the swivel is based on a Static (non-rotating) Load rating of all components of the swivel. This means that if the swivel was pulled in a straight line from each end with no rotation:
Remember, this is the design criteria. Metal fatigue will play a part and as the swivel is used over and over these safety factors will decrease. |
