The various stages of this sealing system are designed to act progressively:
                -
Stage One - Labyrinth Gap Seal
                   -
Stage Two - Mechanical Seal
                        -
Stage Three - Lip Seal

The Labyrinth Gap Seal is the first stage of sealing, which is designed to prevent passage of larger particles into the swivel.   It has left hand thread to auger out particles.

The DUB-Swivels use a highly sophisticated Mechanical Seal developed by Chicago Rawhide.  This seal is used in military applications for dessert vehicles where sand is a major problem, also in such applications as cement mixers etc.

The seal consists of two lapped steel rings that rotate against each other.  Pressure is maintained on these rings by two outer 'boots'.  Passage past these rings is not possible in either direction unless some damage has occurred.   It is this seal that causes the DUB-Swivel to have a pressure relief valve because the grease cannot be forced past the seal, even under pressure of a grease gun.

Both DUB-Swivel and DUB-Lite swivel have a gap seal to prevent entry of large particles and they both have a Viton Lip seal as the final seal.

The Lip seal is only good for preventing liquids from passing and can be easily damaged by solid particles of any size, yet this is often the only seal used in many directional swivels on the market.  This seal consists of a viton rubber lipseal held against the rotating shaft by a spring.  DCD only uses this seal for the final stage in a multiple stage system.
